You can switch any time
You're not tied to your accountant by the calendar — you can move whenever you like, not just at year-end. If you're not getting value, quick replies, or clear advice, there's no reason to wait.
The process, step by step
- Have a quick, free chat with us so we understand your business and agree a fixed price
- Sign a letter of engagement and authorise us to act for you with HMRC
- We contact your previous accountant for your records and professional clearance
- We get you set up on our cloud software and check nothing's outstanding
- You're done — we take it from there
In practice, the only thing we usually need from you is a quick authorisation. We do the rest — including the slightly awkward bit of contacting your old accountant.
The "professional clearance" bit
When you move, your new accountant writes to the old one for "professional clearance" and any records they hold — your accounts, tax data and so on. This is completely routine and happens behind the scenes. You don't need to have an uncomfortable conversation; a short email to let them know you're moving is enough.
Will I lose my history?
No. Your records and filing history stay intact — with HMRC, with Companies House, and in the handover pack we collect. We pick up exactly where things left off.
Signs it's time to move
- You can never get hold of them, or replies take days
- You only ever hear from them once a year
- You're hit with bills you weren't expecting
- They speak in jargon and never explain things
- You're not confident you're paying the right amount of tax
Switching to Sorley takes about ten minutes of your time. We'll get you set up, handle the handover, and you'll have a family-run team that actually picks up the phone — for a fixed, transparent price. Start the conversation here, or see the areas we cover.
How to switch accountants — FAQs
Is it difficult to switch accountants?
Not at all. It usually takes about ten minutes of your time — you authorise us to act, and we handle the handover and professional clearance with your old accountant.
Can I switch in the middle of my accounting year?
Yes. You can change accountants at any point in the year. We'll make sure nothing falls through the cracks during the transition.
Do I have to tell my old accountant?
A brief note to let them know is courteous and helps things move quickly, but we make the formal contact for your records and clearance on your behalf.
